Imagination. Innovation. Abstraction.
When is a river not a river? What are the impacts of landscapes of a temporary presence? Can plants be moved like furniture? Five years ago Expressions was produced to spotlight the trajectory of AHBE Landscape Architects founder Calvin R. Abe, a creative who admittedly had “never intended to be a landscape architect”, yet has shaped Southern California’s topography since establishing the firm in 1987.
Expressions documents the conceptual process behind three of his award winning projects – The No Name Garden, Infonet Headquarters, and The Los Angeles River Center – each embodying a different facet of his design philosophy, and in the process revealing how he utilized a lifelong desire to pursue the more abstract qualities of nature as constructible expressions imprinted onto the urban landscape.
