1-Backyard infrastructureWhat was in your backyard growing up? I had a transmission tower.

My memories growing up on a farm just outside of Sacramento are wonderful. My nearest neighbor was about a 1/2 mile away, and I remember the freedom to play on almost 40 acres of open fields surrounded by other farms and cattle ranches. However, our farm was special.

In mid-1950’s my family was forced to accept one of the major power transmission tower which connected Nimbus Dam to the City of Sacramento. My grandfather and father protested, but to no avail. Although as children these towers were just something to play on – hit with rocks, to listen on foggy days, and admired for their size and scale – they also represented civic progress, technology, and mostly the politics of eminent domain.
