Silverwood Lake Nature Center – CA.Gov

This is a short experimental video I did for a building designed by Touraine Richmond Architects – the Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area Visitors’ Center in California’s San Bernardino Mountains.

If I remember correctly – as we have been recently talking about books that inspire the design process – the concept behind the Silverwood Lake building was directly inspired by Italo Calvino’s 1957 novel The Baron in the Trees – the story of a boy who climbs up a tree and vows never to come down again. It’s a beautiful building – the manner in which the sycamores emerge through the slab, definitely give the feeling of being within a tree canopy. It was a fun exercise in communicating the design process via physical models, plan graphics, and of course, California.
